![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Like Maggie’s other adventures, there are more than a few red herrings thrown across our path, and quite a bit of pedantic dialogue, but overall MacNeal keeps this mystery rolling along nicely. ![]() Much as Maggie might like to be able to put those memories firmly behind her, she must confront him in order to try to apprehend the new murderer, and deal with her conflicting feelings about the death penalty as well. This serial killer seems to have a connection to the killer she thwarted in The Queen’s Accomplice (book #6), even as that murderer is counting down the days to his execution. Despite her best efforts, she can’t help but get involved, especially when she figures out that her new comrades in bomb defusing, many of whom are conscientious objectors, may be the killer’s targets. She’s convinced herself that this is perfectly acceptable, until another serial killer hits the streets of London. She’s zipping through town on her motorbike, smoking, trying to get her new boyfriend into bed with her, and defusing bombs left over from the Blitz. Poor Maggie has been through the wringer is the first 8 books, and has taken up living on the edge as a way to deal. Review: In this 9th installment of the Maggie Hope series, MacNeal’s heroine is really struggling. ![]()

I originally bought Katie’s Picture Show for an art topic when I was teaching Grade Two and the entertaining story (with a non fiction element included) was a great way to introduce children to different paintings. She eats apple pie and cream cakes, plays with a hoop, visits the jungle and has to be rescued from the final painting by the museum guard! So begins an amazing adventure in which Katie climbs into five very different paintings. ![]() At the first painting Katie ignores the Please Do Not Touch sign and discovers that she can climb into the painting. The Story: At the art gallery Katie’s grandma tells her to go and look at some pictures while she has a rest. We’ve read many more since and also been to one of James’ storytelling sessions at The National Gallery in London. Thankfully “A Time of Eggs” was knocked back by either John’s editors, dogs or highly accomplished children, and “A Time of Dread” found its way into existence… and onto my doorstep. I’d already imagined their futures, and after all the hardships they faced I wanted peaceful mornings, bacon, and juice for them. Excited was not the word Wrath ended perfectly, and whilst I knew I would miss the characters I’d come to know and love, I also knew that to spend too much time with them after such an epic conclusion would put the relationship at risk of growing stale.
